Microsoft 365 Post‑Migration Stabilisation & Tenant Recovery

Headset with microphone resting on a laptop keyboard.

Why post‑migration stabilisation matters

A Microsoft 365 migration doesn’t end when data and users go live.

After migration, many organisations are left with a tenant that technically “works”, but feels disorganised, confusing, difficult to manage and frustrating to use. Ownership is unclear, permissions have grown organically and out of line with the business’s requirements for confidentiality, integrity and availability, and governance hasn’t kept pace during the migration.

IT KiTT provides post‑migration stabilisation and tenant recovery for Microsoft 365 environments that need structure, clarity and control, without the cost or disruption of a full‑time hire. Supports delivery with a Cyber Security Level 3 qualified, security‑aware approach, reinforcing governance, access control and alignment to business requirements.

When a Microsoft 365 tenant needs stabilising

This area of support is required when a Microsoft 365 tenant has been migrated or inherited, but day‑to‑day use and management are confusing and harder in practice than expected.

Common indicators include:

• SharePoint sites and Teams have grown with poor integration and without clear ownership

• Permissions are unclear, over‑extended or difficult to audit

• Users are confused about where to work and adoption is slow

• Users are unsure where to store information or who can access it

• Sensitive data is at risk of being incorrectly surfaced

• Internal IT teams are supporting an environment they didn’t design

• Governance was discussed during migration, but not fully implemented

Over time, these issues increase risk to confidentiality, integrity and availability, hinder productivity making the tenant harder to support.

Stabilisation focuses on understanding and structuring what already exists, identifying where structure is missing and implementing appropriate permission models to improve confidence, engagement and ongoing management and governance.

What we stabilise in a Microsoft 365 tenant

Tenant stabilisation focuses on understanding what exists today, how it is being used, and where risk or friction has been introduced over time.

During a stabilisation engagement, IT KiTT typically reviews:

• Current tenant configuration and governance approach

• SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive structure and usage

• Site and team ownership, including gaps or unclear responsibility

• Permission models, inheritance and areas of over‑exposure

• Existing documentation, standards or decisions made during migration

The aim is not to redesign the tenant or undo previous work, but to create clarity and a stable baseline. This allows issues to be prioritised, governance gaps to be addressed and future changes to be made with greater confidence and control.

A summary of the areas reviewed during stabilisation is outlined in our What we stabilise in a Microsoft 365 tenant document.

Permissions and ownership review

Permissions and ownership are often the most complex and risk‑laden areas of a Microsoft 365 tenant, particularly following migration or periods of organic growth.

As part of tenant stabilisation, IT KiTT reviews how permissions and ownership are currently being used and managed across SharePoint and Teams.

This typically includes:

• Identifying site and team owners, including where ownership is missing or unclear

• Reviewing how permissions are assigned and inherited

• Highlighting areas of over‑permission or unnecessary exposure

• Identifying patterns that create ongoing support or governance challenges

The aim is to bring clarity to who has access to what and why. This helps reduce risk, improves confidence, user adoption and provides a clearer foundation for ongoing governance and decision making without disrupting day‑to‑day operations.

Our permissions and ownership review approach is detailed further in our Permissions and Ownership Review for Microsoft 365 tenants document.

Post‑migration stabilisation checklist

Migration activity often concludes once data and users are live, but issues that affect security, usability and governance frequently surface later.

As part of tenant stabilisation, IT KiTT uses a post‑migration checklist approach to validate that key elements of the Microsoft 365 environment have been configured, applied and aligned as intended.

This typically includes:

• Confirming agreed configuration and structure have been applied consistently

• Checking that permissions and access reflect expected use

• Identifying common post‑migration gaps or oversights

• Highlighting areas where governance decisions may still be required

This checklist‑driven approach provides assurance that the tenant is stable and usable and helps internal teams prioritise next steps with greater confidence, rather than reacting to issues as they arise.

This approach is supported by a structured Post‑migration stabilisation checklist used to sense‑check key areas following migration.
